Brief History About Lion Dance

The Lion was first performed during the Han Dynasty, from 206 A.D. to 24 A.D. There are four types of lions:

1) Pi Kou Shih-closed mouth Lion
2) Kai Kou Shih-Open mouth Lion
3) Pei Fang Shih-Northern/Peking/Beijing Lion
4) Hsing Shih-Southern Cantonese Lion.

The Northern Lions originated in Beijing and often resembles a Pekinese Dog. The Northern Lions can be male or female, depending on color coordination and other small features. The Southern Lions is often the more popular of the two. The two most popular and used Southern lions used are the Fut-san and Hok-san. The Fut-san lions are much more rounder in shape while the Hok-san lions are flatter and has a duck-billed shaped mouth.
